On Saturday, 20th May, 2023 a historic event took place in the Catholic Church of Malawi: twenty seminarians were ordained to the diaconate. Among these newly ordained deacons, two were from the diocese of Mangochi and their names are Deacon Leo Mpembedza and Deacon Steven Limbani Kasimu. The ceremony was held at the ground of St. Peter’s Major Seminary in Zomba and attended by priests, brothers, sisters and family members who had come from all over Malawi.
Bishop Gabriel Nsipu from Zambia presided over the Eucharistic Mass. These twenty newly ordained Deacons will be serving God’s people throughout the Catholic dioceses of Malawi after finishing their formation program.
The ordination to diaconate is one of three orders within holy orders, which are required for priesthood: deacons can baptize, preach sermons, witness marriages among other duties that cannot be performed by lay people.
