Balaka, Malawi – The St. Louis Montfort Parish in Balaka was a centre of activity, as a cross-section of Bishops, priests, brothers, sisters, and faithful Christians gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of Fr. Giancarlo Palazzini. The Holy Mass, led by Rt. Rev. Montfort Stima, Bishop of the Diocese of Mangochi, was a proof of the profound impact Fr. Palazzini had on the Catholic community in Malawi, and the Diocese of Mangochi in particular.
In his homily, His Grace Archbishop George Desmond Tambala, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Lilongwe, reflected on the life of Fr. Palazzini, recounting his own personal experience with the late priest in 1985. “Fr. Palazzini would often remind us that Jesus did everything He was sent to do, and now it’s our turn to continue His work,” Archbishop Tambala said.
Quoting the Gospel of John (15:20), Archbishop Tambala emphasized the importance of carrying one’s cross, just as Fr. Palazzini did throughout his life, particularly during his battle with illness. “Fr. Palazzini’s life was a proof of his faith and perseverance. He carried his cross with dignity and humility, inspiring countless others to do the same.”
Archbishop Tambala also highlighted Fr. Palazzini’s numerous contributions to the Catholic community, including the construction of over 100 churches and schools, and his unwavering support for the education of young boys and girls.
A representative of the Christian community paid tribute to Fr. Palazzini’s dedication and selflessness, saying, “He has left an indelible mark on our community, and his legacy will be difficult to replace.”
Fr. Samuel Salatiel, representing the Montfort Missionaries, praised Fr. Palazzini’s commitment to the formation of young missionaries and his pastoral zeal. “He loved his Christians and took his parish work very seriously,” Fr. Salatiel said.
Bishop Montfort Sitima, in his remarks, described the day’s event as a celebration of a life well-lived. “We can’t talk about the Catholic Church in southern Malawi without mentioning the Montfort Missionaries, and Fr. Giancarlo Palazzini was one of them.”
The Bishop also commended Fr. Palazzini’s love for the Chichewa language and his commitment to inculturation. “He never used English in his homilies, and his love for our local language was inspiring.” He concluded by saying, “Fr. Palazzini was a true missionary, worthy emulating.
Other dignitaries present at the Mass included Archbishop Thomas Luke Msusa of the Archdiocese of Blantyre and Rt. Rev. Mwakhwawa, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Lilongwe.
Fr. Giancarlo Palazzini passed away on March 30, 2025, in Italy, and was laid to rest on April 2, 2025, at Redona, Italy.
