The Daughters of Mary Immaculate (DMI) was founded in 1984 in India by the visionary humanist, and a humble servant of God, Very.Rev.Fr.J.E.Arul Raj on the Biblical theme of serving God through serving people. The burning love for fellow human beings and the providential instinct for missionary work prompted DMI to extend its activities to the continents of Africa and South America.
Today, DMI proudly serves more than 3,500,000 women, 9000+ Engineering Students , 8000 students at school level, 35,000 + children under care in India alone. The founder also established another religious society for men, Missionaries of Mary Immaculate -MMI. MMIs are working in many missions across the world – hand in hand with sisters of DMI.
DMI came to Tanzania, Africa in the year 2003 and within a span of 5 years, DMI had established Five Colleges of Higher Learning, one school and made an impression in the field of Womens Development and serving 6000+ women and 1600+ students in Tanzania alone.
The DMI was graciously welcomed and encouraged by His Lordship, Rt.Rev.Dr.Alessandro Pagani, the Bishop of Mangochi Diocese, to establish a Tertiary Institution in Malawi for elevating the Malawians. The outcome was the Citadel of Learning DMI-St. John the Baptist University in Mangochi, Malawi established on the auspicious day of 11.05.2011.
The constant support and encouragement given by the different stakeholders in education, like Government, Church, Parents, students and the general public were encouraging and made it possible for DMI to commit actively. DMI-SJBU is a University with a difference and with a definite focus towards the personal development and capacity building of each and every student who has been entrusted upon which will lead to definite sustainable all round development of the nation.
