CATHOLIC JOURNALISTS: A TOOL OF PEACE
On Saturday, December 15th, 2018, Catholic Journalists from different media houses from Balaka, Machinga, Mangochi and Zomba districts under the banner of Associated Catholics Journalists from the Eastern Region of Malawi (AECJ), gathered for a day’s moment of retreat, evaluation and planning at Montfort Media in Balaka.
In his reflections at Mass, Diocesan Communications and Research Director of Diocese of Mangochi, Fr. Harry Mang’anda appealed to the journalists to hasten coverage of ‘2019 tripartite elections issues since elections are process and not an event. “It is very important that as Catholic journalists in the region, you begin concocting people for the forthcoming elections. Your publications should prepare the populous to accept the possibility of a peaceful electoral exercise right from campaign period, polling, declaration of results and investiture”. He said.
“Jesus was the first journalist and his message was one of love and peace. He loved us all and through his death brought peace into the world. If you engage Jesus in your profession as journalists and vocation as Catholics, peace in 2019 general elections is possible”. Fr. Harry added.
A Catholic media guru, Fr. Blaise Jailosi, called on the reporters to widen the horizon of their profession; and start delivering through other outlets. “By use of modern ways and means of communications that appeal to judicious tips and techniques that deliver, penetrate to other media houses. Do not limit yourselves”. He said. On this, he asked the journalists to publish stories with Luntha Television, Montfort Media and other Catholic media quarters.
In his statement, ACJ Secretary General, Mr. Martin Mlelemba, saluted the chapter for remarkable strides in the year 2018. “The Eastern Chapter has been the most organized chapter in the dying year. The national office commends your strides. You have been glorious. Keep the fire burning in 2019” remarked Mlelemba. He however implored members to subscribe before the year lapses.
Among other things, the AGM evaluated 2018 and drew a calendar of events for smooth operations of the association in 2019.
2018 AGM and retreat was held under the theme: “Catholic Journalists, Tools of Peaceful 2019 Elections: the truth will set you free”.
