There has been a strange wave in the country of Malawi, stimulated by some people who claim to be human rights defenders, who have been fighting for a bill of homosexuality to pass, thereby legalizing that practice. Recently, strong rumors quaked Malawians to say that the so called ‘defenders of human rights’ want to go to court and ask the law enforcers to legalize it.
In reaction to this, many stakeholders were alarmed with this plan and did not remain silent. For example, on 7th July, 2023, the Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM) and the Malawi Council of Churches (MCC) wrote a letter to their members to mobilize people of good will to march peacefully against this plan in order to defend the Family, Marriage and Human Sexuality. Following this, the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) enhanced some awareness on the need to march peacefully against homosexuality.
In the Diocese of Mangochi, there was a meeting on 10th July, 2023 at the diocesan offices, chaired by the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP). Its aim was to discuss how these peaceful demonstrations can be effectively held in the district of Mangochi. At that meeting, there were some representatives of other denominations who unanimously agreed that homosexuality is against human nature therefore ungodly. “We actually started already mobilizing our people at the Mosque to stand strong against this malpractice. We were watchful to see of the Catholic Church will not speak about this. Now, after this meeting, we will add an extra gear,” said Sheikh Abdullah Kaposa who represented the Qadriah Association of Malawi.
According to the plan, these peaceful demonstrations will take place on 13th July, 2023, together with other Catholic dioceses in the country of Malawi. All people of good will who can indeed participate peacefully in these demonstrations are welcome. From Mponda Catholic Church ground, the marching people will go and deliver their petitions to the District Commissioner of Mangochi district.
