Playing a greater role in excellent performance in different Catholic secondary schools, the Catholic Education Commission of Malawi (CEC) has encouraged its teachers in different Catholic secondary schools to enforce discipline and good behaviors amongst students. This was said at a meeting held on 16th March, 2024 at La Riviera Beach Resort in Mangochi where they were discussing the new methods on what schools should follow in order to mould students into responsible citizens.
Speaking at the meeting, Bishop Chairman for the Catholic Education Commission who is also the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Blantyre, Rt. Rev. Thomas Luke Msusa, expressed his gratitude towards the good work the Catholic teachers are doing in different Catholic secondary schools saying that it has improved the performance and the bishops are very happy.
Rt. Rev. Msusa also emphasized on the matter of good character formation to the teachers, saying that the goal of Catholic secondary schools is to build a better Malawi with responsible leaders and citizens. Therefore, he encouraged the teachers not only to focus on a better performance, but also to teach good moral values and norms in order to have responsible citizens.
In addition, the bishop expressed his concern on the matter of corruption, saying that it is very sad that many people involved in cases of corruption in our country are highly educated and devoted Catholics. He therefore encouraged the education sector to introduce new subjects containing character formation from kindergarten so that the children should know what is right to do.
Mrs. Linly Chavula, the Chair for the Association of Catholic Secondary Schools and also the Headmistress for Marymount Secondary School, admitted her remarks saying that they have already started practicing the exercise in different schools though they are facing a lot of challenges due to the advancement of technology.
The Chairperson also appreciated the meeting saying that it will really help them since teachers from different Catholic Secondary Schools across Malawi have met and they will share common good practices that they do in their schools in order to come up with a better solution.
The association of Catholic Secondary Schools comprises of Catholic head teachers and teachers across the country.
