In a vibrant display of faith and community, Christians and priests from the 25 parishes of the Diocese of Mangochi and beyond, gathered at St. Magdalena of Canossa – Koche Parish on easter Monday for a Mock Wedding ceremony. The event, which drew attention to the significance of marital commitment, was also a fundraiser for the diocesan priests’ medical scheme with the Medical Aid Society of Malawi (MASM).
The Holy Mass, presided over by the Rt. Rev. Montfort Stima, Bishop of Mangochi, featured the renewal of wedding vows by Francis and Sekundina. During his homily, Bishop Stima reflected on the biblical account of the Wedding at Cana (John 2:1-11), where Jesus performed his first miracle. “Jesus waits for a need to perform miracles, unlike present-day prophets who seek fame through miracle-working,” Bishop Stima noted. “Renewing wedding vows is like responding to Mary’s words, ‘Do whatever he tells you.'”
The Bishop emphasized that marriage requires nurturing and renewal, saying, “Marriage life is like a tank filled with water, but it reaches a point where the tank gets empty. That’s when couples need to follow Mary’s words, ‘Do everything that he tells you.'” He added that Jesus is present to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary in marriages, bringing back the flame of love.
Following the Mass, the couple and their guests proceeded to the iconic Cana House, situated on the picturesque shores of Lake Malawi, for a reception. The afternoon was filled with the joyful sounds of the renowned Alleluia Band and a sumptuous luncheon.
Tragically, the celebration was tempered by the news of the passing of Pope Francis, announced by the Vatican. The congregation offered prayers for the eternal rest of the Pope’s soul.
The Mock Wedding fundraiser was a proof of the community’s spirit and commitment to supporting their priests. As the Diocese of Mangochi continues to raise funds for the medical scheme, the event served as a reminder of the power of faith, love, and community. May the legacy of Pope Francis inspire continued devotion and service.
