Priests of The Diocese of Mangochi Renew Their Priestly Vows as They Celebrate Chrism Mass

The Diocese of Mangochi was abuzz with spiritual fervor as priests from far and wide converged on the cathedral to celebrate the Chrism Mass, led by their shepherd, Rt. Rev. Montfort Stima. This solemn liturgy, traditionally observed on Holy Thursday, was a vivid reminder of the significance of the priesthood and the sacred oils that facilitate the spiritual journey of the faithful.

During the Mass, Bishop Stima blessed the three sacred oils that will be used throughout the diocese in the coming year: Chrism, Oil of the Sick, and Oil of Catechumens. These oils are tangible symbols of God’s grace and mercy. Chrism, used in the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders, signifies the consecration and sanctification of God’s people. The Oil of the Sick provides comfort and healing to those afflicted by illness, while the Oil of Catechumens prepares those on the path to baptism.

In a heartfelt homily, Bishop Montfort Stima reminded the priests and the faithful gathered at the Chrism Mass that today the Church commemorates the institution of two sacred sacraments: Holy Orders and the Eucharist.

The ceremony provided a perfect moment for priests to renew their vows, reaffirming the sacred nature of their calling. Bishop Stima emphasized that priesthood is a gift from God, bestowed upon individuals for the benefit of the entire Church. “A priest is another Christ, standing in persona Christi, called to be holy in word and deed, to teach, sanctify, and mediate between God and His people,” the Bishop said.

As the priests reflected on their ministry, Bishop Stima challenged them to acknowledge their shortcomings in serving the poor, a fundamental aspect of Christ’s teachings. “We must feel guilty that in many ways we have failed to implement Christ’s manifesto of service to the poor,” he said, urging a renewed commitment to their sacred duties.

In his remarks, Mr. Alexander Billy, Chairperson of the Laity Council, expressed the laity’s appreciation for the priests’ dedication, pledging continued support and care for their spiritual leaders.

Fr. Steven Kamanga, Chairperson of the local Association of Diocesan Clergy of Malawi (ADCCOM), extended warm greetings to Bishop Stima and Bishop Emeritus Alessandro Pagani, celebrating the gift of priesthood. He commended the priests, religious sisters, and laity for their tireless service, wishing all a joyous feast day.

As the Diocese of Mangochi marked this significant occasion, the Chrism Mass served as a powerful reminder of the priesthood’s sacred nature and the importance of serving God’s people with humility, compassion, and love.

As priests renewed their vows, the Mass became a powerful proof of the unity and fraternity that binds the Bishop and his presbyterate. “This celebration is not just a ritual; it’s a reaffirmation of our commitment to serve God’s people,” one priest reflected.

The Chrism Mass is a cherished tradition in the Catholic Church, highlighting the Bishop’s role as a successor to the apostles and the priests’ role in facilitating the sacraments. As the diocese looks forward to the Easter Triduum, the blessings and renewals of today will undoubtedly bear fruit in the lives of the faithful.
