There were heavy rains from 12th to 15th March in Malawi especially the southern part of it. According to the department of climate change and meteorological services, the rains were caused by tropical cyclone Freddy which came from the direction of Mozambique and had killed many people and livestock; many houses got destroyed thereby displacing their inhabitants and some of them were left injured; boreholes had been damaged; crops were washed away and churches had been demolished as well. The displaced people had to seek refuge in the schools and Catholic parish premises. By creating refuge campus (which are seven in number) in schools, it also entails a disturbance of education.
In trying to respond to this situation, the diocese of Mangochi through the Catholic Development Commission in Malawi (CADECOM) in this diocese has been running up and down, visiting different campus where the victims of the floods are being kept and assessing their situation, in order to know the necessary support to give the victims of floods caused by cyclone Freddy. According to CADECOM Coordinator in the diocese of Mangochi, Mr. Peter Nthenda, there are a lot of items needed with urgency to support the flood victims. He said that about 139, 325 families were affected by these floods in this diocese. That is why the bishop of the diocese of Mangochi, Rt. Rev. Montfort Stima wrote a letter on 17th March, appealing to all people of good will to provide assistance to the victims of the cyclone Freddy in kind or cash without discrimination or favor.
